Skirting the Issue: Jessica from A Little Gray

Today we are happy to have our Project Run and Play Season 4 winner...the girl with mad sewing skills...Jessica from A Little Gray!

Hi, I'm Jessica from A Little Gray, and I'm so happy to be back here on Project Run & Play! It will always be a warm fuzzy place (cyber place?) for me ever since I competed in Season 4.

I just love the idea behind the Skirting the Issue event. Every little girl should have something pretty to wear on the first day of school. Personally, I think we can far surpass our goal of 100 skirts!

My skirt is a basic gathered elastic waist design, which you can find lots of great tutorials for. (Some really great ones on this event already!) I made a size 10-12 skirt with two little changes. First, I made the waist casing 2 inches wide instead of 1. After stitching around the fold of the casing, leaving an opening for the elastic, I stitched all the way around again, about 3/4" from the very top, no opening this time. Then I threaded the 1 inch elastic thru and closed it up like normal. This leaves a little bit of a ruffle around the waist.

I also added this unique oversized pocket on one side. Inspired by traditional quilting methods, an outfit Zooey Deschanel wore, and a dress at Anthro, this pocket is made with some simple folding and binding. Check out the full pocket tutorial here on my blog. It's such a versatile and fun design element that's easy to adjust in size. Make a big one, or two smaller ones, put them on tunics, dresses, or the back of pants- wherever!

While you are there be sure to say hi and check out some of my other projects and tutorials. Thanks for having me Liz and Elizabeth!
