Wohoo, week 3 is here and I'm so glad to still be part of the competition. Thank you so much for your votes. I still can't believe that I actually won week 2! But, let's get on to week 3: "All that Glitters" - wow, what a theme. I'm normally not someone to use glitter, sequins etc. I mainly sew everyday wear as I want to see those clothes getting worn more than once. It took me quite some time to decide what I want to sew. In the end I decided to make a fun and special sister/brother look for a kids' night out, i.e. stylish and maybe even edgy clothes with a little bit of glitter and sparkle that, however, are 100% kid appropriate and will work just as perfect for a nice family dinner as for some fun hours on the playground. I chose a burgundy/golden color scheme as these warm colors are perfekt for my two blonde kids. We did the photoshoot at home with a black background and a burgundy blanket. The shooting at home wasn't my number 1 choice, but I'm really happy how things turned out. My husband entertained the kids, I shot away and my two cuties let their magic happen. We will have to get some of these pictures printed to hang them in our living room.

My daughter's outfit consists of two pieces: A modified Little Betty Top by Sewpony Vintage (loose fitting, longer ruffles, high low hem - check my blog for pictures of the hi-lo hem) sewn in a gorgeous golden glitter jersey. The neckline and sleeves are finished with burgundy jersey. For her pants I used burgundy corduroy. Leggings would have worked well with the look, too, but my daughter has leggings in all colors of the rainbow while she is in constant need of some "real" pants. As she doesn't like skinny jeans, I made her some comfy pants with elastic waist (+ functioning drawstring from some glittery cording) and shirred leg hems. The pants have two cargo pockets, that have a flat top with a gathered lower part. A burgundy ribbon with golden spots is stitched along the flat top and a diamond shaped faux leather applique adds some uniqueness. The pants are based on an Ottobre pattern, nr 18 from issue 1/2014. For my son's outfit I worked with two patterns by Titchy Threads. The t-shirt is a Safari Raglan in burgundy jersey with a modified pocket (some more golden faux leather). The shorts are based on the Small Fry Skinny Jeans, but adjusted for fit (the grey upcycled jeans fabric has 0 stretch). The front pockets are cut straight and the back features a welt pocket - both giving a less casual look. The burgundy top stitching, zip-fly and hand-sewn button hole make these some very professional shorts that my son loves. My son's college jacket is based on an Ottobre sweatshirt pattern (nr. 17 from 6/2014) and may well be my favorite piece of the three PRP weeks so far. I've wanted to sew such a jacket for a long time and this one turned out exactly as I imagined. I traced a photo of a tiger in Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool to create a stencil. My friend Miriam was kind enough to cut it from freezer paper using her Silhouette. I then ironed it on the finished jacket and used golden fabric paint. I just love how it turned out. It's absolutely perfect for my little rockstar. Both outfits are finished with two masks from the golden faux leather on which I glued some beautiful feathers and rhinestones. The masks are held in place by white/golden rubber bands. I love how the masks pull the outfits together and give the photoshoot that added pizzaz. I hope you like both outfits as much as I do. Please come over to Näh-connection to see many more pictures  and to get your tiger freebie. Yes, you read that right: You can get that tiger in two file formats (svg, pdf) and use it for whatever you want - make it a stencil, cut it from vinyl etc. So, come on over, check out the pics and then come back here to vote for your favorite.

Glitter +Wit---Queen [EB]
QUEEN[EB]

The Story: This is the week I've been waiting for! We (that is, EB and I) love glitter. We also love balloons and confetti and streamers and fireworks and sequins, but glitter is right at the top of the list. My look this week is 'Queen EB,' inspired by none other than EB herself (and the myriad of shiny, sparkly fabrics in my stash). It's kind of a two-for-one look. My original plan was to create a cropped top with an open back + bow closure (see below), paired with a midi length pleated silk skirt. Once I laid the clothes out for EB, she insisted that the top would make a really great jacket. She doesn't often get involved in the design process, so I took her idea and ran with it! I quickly drafted a simple tank to be worn beneath the 'jacket,' with enough length that she could wear the skirt as she prefers (low on the hips instead of at the waist) without exposing her adorable, lingering toddler tum. The glittered flats from Target and Liberty of London gemstone print crown (handmade by me, but made long ago and pulled from the dress-up box) finished off the look splendidly.

The Sewing: The first piece I sewed this week was the skirt. It is a very lightweight silk with polka-dotted stripes and an embossed floral pattern. I pleated the skirt according to the width of the stripes, and created a comfortable and highly adjustable elastic waist by finishing the top edge with foldover elastic. I had never tried this before, but I love that the end result is a comfy, not bulky waistband that easily stretches from 16-24". Talk about getting a lot of wear out of one garment! It would also work well as a sundress or swim cover with the addition of straps. Now I'm scheming... ;) The skirt has a single french seam in the back, and a narrow rolled hem. The jacket/top is a Mingo&Grace MG2715 hack in a fun gold foil digital-print neoprene. I cut the center of the back pieces away at the shoulder and added a length of fabric to each side to form a bow. The bow is a tissue-weight rayon shimmer jersey, and the edges of the jacket/top are finished with black jersey knit strips. The tank is self-drafted, and shaped to follow the curves of the fabric pattern. The top edges are finished with foldover elastic which also extends to form the straps. The fabric is a polyester fused lace with silver glitter. The crown is another self-drafted design that, like my eared hat, I sell in my Glitter+Wit shop. Queen EB (so-called because of the way she took charge of her outfit and photoshoot) really loves this outfit and was so happy to model it, can't you tell? There are so many more photos I wish I could have shared here, so please click over to my blog to see the entire look in more detail! xo

Sewing Mama RaeAnna---Just Think of a Wonderful Thought

I can't believe I made it to week 3 and I'm so glad because I LOOOOOVE all things with glitter and sparkle! So much so, that it was really hard for me to nail down an idea and design to go with for this week. I ended up picking Tinkerbell to inspire my Glitter challenge. When I was brainstorming what design elements to use, I just knew that I needed to incorporate a Peter Pan collar! In drafting and planning, I wondered where the whole etymology of the name "Peter Pan" collar came from and I was fascinated with the Wikipedia information (click here if you'd like to read more!) I created the detachable collar out of gold sequin confetti dot fabric and lined it in the mossy green fabric of the dress. The gold glitter ribbon in the front creates that extra heirloom charm! Since I was starting with the collar I knew I needed to go a classic heirloom style for the rest of the outfit and I'm so happy with the results! I think she could step right into the Victorian era as a little lost girl! I had to step up the game in week 3 so I drafted the dress, knickers, collar, and booties and digitized them all for you to download on my website! Go grab it for free by clicking here! 4 patterns in one!

Now, let's talk about the glitter! I had the thought to create a border print on the solid fabric with my gold heat transfer vinyl. I created a panorama silhouette of London with my Silhouette Cameo software and cut out the length to go around the entire dress skirt (just about 100 inches!!!) And then the front bodice needed the perfect touch of Tinkerbell's silhouette with some little golden stars! There is glitter in the ribbon used for the sashes on the dress, and on the soles of the booties! I upcycled a sweater that is flecked with gold thread - I was so glad to see it in my closet! To finish off the booties I created a little nod to Tinkerbell's shoes with the poms. I made them with some long strips of knit and the selvage edge of the sequin confetti dot fabric. I'm so excited for her to wear this during our Disney trip and hope you'll click over to see more pictures on my blog and vote me into the final week!

Sweeter Than Cupcakes---Rock 'n' Sparkle
All That Glitters started out almost as challenging as the Cosplay theme. Gradually, as I collected fabrics and embellishments, the look began to take shape. Switching from elegance typically associated with glitter to sporty attire got my wheels churning. The glitter aspect of these garments stems from sheen, shimmer, and yes, glitter from the various textures of the fabrics as well as the large gems I procured from an old dress of mine. The taffeta fabric for the kimono is from Joann's fabric line aptly named All That Glitters. To maintain a sporty look, I shortened the sleeves of the Chalk and Notch Fishtail Kimono and added epaulets with a gems to secure them. The epaulets pair nicely with the feminine curved hemline and gathered back yoke.

The tee just ups the shine factor. The LouBee Clothing Bimaa sweater was the basis of the design. I reconfigured the neckline and added yokes at the shoulders attaching them with flatlock stitching on my serger.  The shorts became my favorite piece of the collection after transforming a Japanese bubble shorts pattern and assembling an assortment of textures. The fabric is a sturdy flocked knit reflecting a little sheen. The waistband and pocket trim originated from the above mentioned dress and have a vertical luster pattern that is hard to capture on camera. Of course, the gems add the special pop of glitz. I think the only thing still in tact from the original pattern is the middle seam! The glitter knit fabric used for the socks and headband adds touches of sparkle like bookends to the whole look. The socks are The Wolf and The Tree Abby's Trailblazing Socks with details added to the cuff.  Sporty and glittery can be a girl's best friends combined into one very fun ensemble!
