Meet the Designer: Tara from Girl Like the Sea

Hello all! I'm supposed to write a bio for myself so you know who I am.  Time and age have shown me that I don't know who I am as well as I thought, but I'll do my best to tell you what I've figured out so far. (If you're still reading after that weird introduction.)  I live in Portland OR in an old craftsman home my husband and I bought this summer, and are still working on making home with our four kids (ages 9, 8, 5, 2) and a kitten named bill murray.  I split my time between homeschooling, learning to paint and draw, cooking food my kids hate, sewing, listening to sad music, driving to the library, romping in nature, and trying to find my shopping list.  By nature, I'm not super competitive or ambitious, so it's a miracle I ended up in a sewing competition!  Sewing became a thing for me when my 9 year old was a toddler.  My grandma tried to teach me when I was little, but I was too impatient and wild to learn then.  I'm using her old sewing desk now though, so life has come full circle in a way.  Since I don't have my grandma to turn to for help learning to sew, I use youtube and blogs instead. Same with art techniques or home improvements. I meet all my friends on the internet too.  Adulting is hard.  My sewing style flows between quirky, eclectic, and whimsical.  One of my favorite things is to sew my kids tee shirts with really nice jersey knit, add a custom graphic to it with freezer paper stencil (and maybe a cape), and then yell at them for wiping their dirty hands on it when I should have used the fancy knit for myself.  While I'm a fancy fabric fan, I'm not really fancy when it comes to design, often preferring simple over complicated or frilly.  So we'll see how I fare in a competition.....Wish me luck! I'm gonna need it.  My blog is over at Girl Like The Sea  It's taken a backseat to homeschooling and learning to do art, so it hasn't been updated in a while, but you can still see lots of my previous sewing there.  Lately I've been more active on my Instagram feed as tarafaul.
