Meet the Designer: Richelle from Baby Nest USA

Hi everyone! I’m Richelle Sangcap-Hernandez, the mom behind @babynestusa (www.instagram.com/babynestusa www.facebook.com/babynestusa) I’m originally from the Philippines, moved to Miami and currently lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I’m the Filipina version of Martha Stewart minus her fat bank account. I love arts and crafts, cooking, sewing and photography. I’m happily married to my wonderful husband Nelson. We have a 10 years old daughter, Reine Ashlynn. I came from a family of seamstresses on my maternal side. My great grandmother, grandma, mother and aunts were/are seamstresses. My grandma taught all the girls from my maternal side how to sew. They all worked locally and abroad without a diploma or formal training but with determination and skills. Sewing is what brought foods to our table. I grew up watching my grandma sew garments and home decors on her Singer treadle sewing machine. Me and my siblings will wear grandma-made clothes that match her windows and couch! It was so much fun! When I was a kid I used to play on my grandma’s remnants and will hand sew clothes for my dolls and our dogs. Unfortunately, my grandma passed away at her 50s and I did not have the chance to be trained by her. Just few weeks moving to Miami from the Philippines in 2013, me and my daughter were so bored and home sick. Unable to work yet by that time, my husband got me a basic portable sewing machine and it all started from there! Apparently, I also have the sewing DNA! I started watching You Tube tutorials, read sewing blogs and sewing books to learn how to sew garments for my daughter. I fell in love with sewing since then! I started pattern testing for several PDF companies a year ago and picked up photography. Me and my daughter fell in love with the process. We have a good team! My daughter loves arts (paper and digital) and has a good eye for fabric colors and prints. She’s usually the one that pick fabrics and styles herself for our shoots. She loves to model, and I always have her participate on my projects from fabric shopping, styling, editing etc. We take pride in our work and self-taught skills and I still sew and shoot when I’m off from my full-time job at a rehab hospital. I’m so excited to be here and can’t wait to show you what this mom and daughter duo can offer!
