Jessica from Me Sew Crazy with Her Spring Fever Dress

Hi everyone - Jessica here from Me Sew Crazy. I am always honored whenever Elizabeth & Liz invite me to be a part of something, I have nothing but the utmost respect for these two talented ladies. So when they asked if I would be interested in seeing one of my own creations remixed, well - how could I resist?

You see, I have a special place in my heart for the Spring Fever Dress. It was one of the first designs I ever came up with, from start to finish, all in the middle of an early morning jog. One of the first patterns I ever drafted, one of the first tutorials I ever shared on my blog, one of the first posts I ever diligently added to link parties, which therefore led to one of the first things from my blog to ever be featured. I still remember the dance I did around my living room when the very first big blogger mentioned my work - thank you House of Hepworths for that!

The Spring Fever dress is where it all started for me, so seeing it come to Project Run & Play as a remix is almost a little like coming full circle with it. Since that landmark post, I have come to know so much more about myself and my own personal sense of style when sewing and designing.  I have learned not just to go with the trends, but rather to sew what my kids will wear. What visually pleases my eye, and what textiles I naturally enjoy working with.

I believe sewing should be easy. That it is truly something everyone can do. I tend to gravitate towards style that can be accomplished in a day or two during naptimes, versus the long haul projects. Sewing should be fun, rewarding, and empowering - and the key is finding out which projects give you those three key words. For some people, that is indeed the multi-pleat and pintuck baptism dress. When you find what you are passionate about sewing though, the sky is the limit. It unlocks your creativity in a way that is so powerful.

Places like Pinterest can help us to cultivate new ideas, learn new techniques, keep up with trends, and even refine our style. But I find it operates best as a motivator. I love seeing the beautiful images all in one place, which absolutely drives me to continue to create. It helps me to know that we as seamstresses can put beautiful things into the world, that we have a gift.

Using that gift to lovingly make handmade clothing for my kids, clothes that will go with them even when I cannot. Well, that just makes it all worthwhile.

Thanks so much for having me here today ladies, I cannot wait to see what everyone comes up with for the Spring Fever Dress! So exciting!

  1. You said it so well! My most important thing is always making things my kids will love and wear. I'm still trying to come up with a remix but I can't wait to see what everyone else does with it too. I love how unique and different we all are!

  2. It really is a lovely pattern to be working with. I am a huge fan of pinterest and while I agree that it can be a motivator I find I often use it as a procrastinator as well :)
Your work is always so beautiful thanks for sharing it.

  3. Oh, I love this statement, "I believe sewing should be easy." I couldn't agree more! I'm surprised at how often people say that sewing seems so difficult. I've developed a habit of responding to the question, "Will you sew something for me?" with "I'll show you how to sew it yourself!"
