Hi there! It's me Shannon, from Little Kids Grow. I'll be the first to admit that when it comes to the 70s, I don't have the fondest fashion memories growing up (except for the a-line plaid mini that I had in preschool, Ha! Ha!). Although I had the chance to experience the ENTIRE decade first hand, the only things that really stick out in my mind fashion-wise are polyester, platform shoes (I had some at age 3) and TWA's (teen weeny afros), LOL. But, over the years as I've watched fashion evolve, I've come to appreciate and even admire the talented designers of each decade and their contribution to style. Now I'm a vintage groopy and love to create clothing that's influenced by a little piece of our past. For Project Run & Play's Flashback, I thought it would be fun to play around with wide-legged pants, halters, and jumpsuits while giving my 11-year-old girls a crash course in what was "cool" back in the day! So, for your viewing pleasure, I offer you MODERN 70s (TWEEN STYLE) (And, yes, I plan to show their kids these pics one day! :) )
In the spirit of the 70s, everything was upcycled, recycled AND thrifted. The first outfit is a 2-piece top and pant set. For the top, I used this pattern. For the front and back bodice, I used a linen fabric and for the attached skirt, I upscycled a vintage, embroidered (very soft) cotton table cloth. I drafted a wide-legged pant using a well-fitted pant as starting point. I added a high-waisted band and front zipper fly.
For the halter jumpsuit, I drafted using the same pattern above as a starting point (adding bust darts for shaping.) I used a double button closure at the back of the neck and zipper at the back waist. I thrifted a cotton fabric with LOTS and LOTS of pretty flowers (very 70s-sh, early 80s-ish, don't you think?) I REALLY wanted some "groovy" polyester, Ha! Lucky for the girls I couldn't find it.
I absolutely adored this project! Thank you Project Run & Play for the opportunity to share a little bit of what I do.
PEACE!
Gorgeous! These are so fantastically hippie-chic :)

Thank you, Amy!
DeleteTruly , you've caught the spirit of the decade. These were my early adult years, and I think I owned similar outfits to both of these.
ReplyDeleteWhat a compliment, Joan. Thank you! (I wouldn't mind the jumpsuit myself. :) )
DeleteYou did such a great job Shannon!!! At first I thought the pictures were of you as a child and I was going to say that your girls look so much like you. Then I realized that it was the girls and you had done a super job of aging the photos.
