This was one of the closest weeks ever in Project Run and Play!!!  Phew....that's because they were all so fantastic....but let's get right to the results.

  Wild + Wanderful--Dracu-Lou

Thank you so much for having me back for another round! Holy cow has this been an inspiring sewing month to be a part of! I'm super excited that I get to share my little vampire with you...and as you can tell, he's very excited to be Dracu-Lou. Louis went to a Halloween party last year and saw a little girl dressed up as a vampire, and has wanted to be one since then. But how do you take such a classic costume and make it sewing-showdown worthy? With little bits of details here and there, of course!



This outfit consists of four total pieces. The basic, black pants (with room underneath for layering in case it's cold outside during Trick or Treating!) are the Patterns for Pirates Playground Pants in a black ponte. The white button-down is the Patterns for Pirates Lumberjack Shirt, of which I shortened the sleeves a bit and added a Victorian-esque bell sleeve. I wanted to keep them shorter than Louis' wrists because he's a kiddo who is constantly pushing his sleeves up, no matter what he wears, and I didn't want them to bother him if they were actually wrist-length. Plus, once Halloween is over, I can chop those sleeves off and he has a staple white button-down in his closet! The most vampirey pieces were both self-drafted. I created Louis a vest with a cascading bat detail, and dramatically curved/pointed bits on the hem. The bats are actually appliqued fabric that I fused onto the vest. The final piece was his cape. I love the striped inner lining and the traditional stand-up collar. And I added extra long, thick ties so it would almost create the ascot-look that we see in traditional vampire styling. Sew and Tell Project--Zorro

This Halloween you can rest easy because Zorro is back to save the day! With the beautiful senorita cheering him on, this iconic hero of Spanish California will be striding through his neighborhood watching out for injustice and collecting candy to share with all. I am so lucky that these kids love dressing up as much as I love sewing costumes for them! Watching how costumes spark their imagination and transport us all to a different time and place never ceases to amaze me. They have so much fun wearing the costumes to all of the Halloween festivities in addition to playing dress up year-round! Both of these costumes started with considerable research so that they would have an air of authenticity. For Zorro, I used thick black ponte and Love Notion’s Moto Maxx pants pattern to create a pair of pants that are both slim fitting for horseback riding and yet allow for a great range of movement for tricky sword fighting. Top-stitching down the sides creates a polished look. The shirt was made using my grandma’s vintage Butterick costume pattern and features a stiff collar, gathers where the shirt body attaches to the front and back yokes, a facing, hand-stitching along the inside of the collar, and a blind hem. The encased elastic at the cuff of the sleeve allows for the upper portion of the gloves to be tucked in so no skin shows. The cape, mask and sash were all self-drafted. The sash has buttonholes along the center back edges so that the laces can be adjusted for a custom fit. I also drafted the hat myself, hand-stitched it using layers of felt fused together and then embellished it with a band of faux leather and small medallions.

 

 For the lovely senorita’s costume, I modified the skirt portion of the SLPCo Cora Dress (maxi option with double ruffle), assembled it with French seams, and added a waistband. The voluminous petticoat that I drafted has an elastic waistband encased in soft knit and a lining to keep the scratchiness of the petticoat netting and tulle away from the skin. The petticoat netting and tulle were hand gathered – all 40 yards of strips! Fortunately, I was able to gather some of the layers together at the same time. For the senorita’s blouse, I used the Daphne top from Made for Mermaids. I added an eyelet lace trim and embroidery around the bottom edge of the shoulder ruffle. The gold, self-drafted sash also has embroidery in addition to gold tassel trim at the ends of the sash. To finish off her outfit, this little senorita wore antique screw-on cameo earrings that I inherited from my grandma. We paired them with this outfit as a special tribute to a woman who loved to sew both clothes and costumes and in turn shared that love with me. Sew Sophie Lynn--Greetings from Africa

 

 Yay! It's week three and we're so excited to share our Halloween look today! We got a little sentimental with our costumes this year. My amazing in-laws have been living in South Africa and Zimbabwe for the last 21 months as humanitarian missionaries. We miss them terribly but have enjoyed learning about all the service they've been doing and all the grand adventures they've been on. They will return home just a few days after Halloween and we thought we'd dress up this year as a little tribute to them.



 My oldest is our safari guide and ready to lead us into the savanna. Her outfit features a jumpsuit made using the Sew Straight and Gather Cafe Romper with added pockets and details. In a faux suede, it's luxurious and soft. For a chilly Halloween night she can throw on her quilted knit bomber jacket made using the Ollie Bomber pattern from Sew A Little Seam. Her purse is a souvenir Grandma sent from Africa. My youngest couldn't wait to be a leopard. I had planned a skin suit until I realized it wouldn't be the most bathroom friendly when she wore it to her school party- got to plan ahead! Instead I slimmed down a Flashback Skinny tee and added a mock-neck and thumb-hole cuffs and paired it with Love Notions Leggins'. Her tail is a simple belt that can easily be taken on and off. Her jacket is a self-drafted scarf neck cardigan with pockets all made from a bargain blanket from Wal-Mart! Throw on some cute handmade faux leather cat ear clips and her outfit is complete. I love Halloween costumes that are cute, simple, and don't cost a fortune! I also love that these outfits can be worn long after the holiday. The leopard separates will pair well with jeans and a cardigan or under a dress or tunic and the romper looks so cute with a scarf or bright belt and sneakers.   Gracious Threads--Bo Beep and Her Sheep



Thank you so much for having me back for a third week! It's been an incredible ride and I hope you'll enjoy reading about my costumes. This week I'm sewing for my two kiddos that you haven't seen yet in this competition. {Please excuse my 15 month old's nose; he is learning to walk and had a run in with the sidewalk}. I chose to sew Little Bo Peep and her sheep costumes, inspired by the Toy Story version. For my daughter's dress, I used the bodice from the Precious Dress by Scientific Seamstress. It is sewn from pink microfibre satin and white bridal satin. The bodice has a lace inset with piping and soutache trim. The bodice is fully lined and closes with an invisible zipper. The skirt has a gathered chiffon overskirt, a satin circle peplum, and a floor length satin skirt trimmed with lace. I appliqued each of the pink satin circles onto the skirt. Under the dress is a 3 layer tulle crinoline to give it volume. To complete the look, my daughter is also wearing a self drafted bonnet (also fully lined) and carries a shepherd's staff, made from a thrift store cane that I painted blue.



My son's sheep costume is loosely based on an Ottobre snowsuit pattern. I added ears (borrowed from my free Sheep Purse pattern), a shaped face edge, and a satin tummy panel. I changed the side zipper to a front opening and hand sewed snap tape to the center front because I didn't want any fur getting caught in zippers or velcro. There are also appliqued hooves on the feet and the hands flip over (although my baby refused to let me cover his hands with them!). A blue satin ribbon ties a bell around his neck. The costume is fully lined with interlock knit, and is super warm, especially with the hands folded over (very important for trick or treating in northern Canada!). Sew Sophie Lynn-- Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice

Fall in Utah is my favorite! The cooler temps and the vibrant leaves just make me one happy girl. I love sewing for cooler weather too. Layers and long sleeves bring so many possibilities. I immediately knew my oldest daughter would want a maxi dress she could wear through the change in seasons. She loves a bit of drama and was head over heels for this look. My little guy is all about comfort and dressing like his big brothers. They live in joggers and tees, and a vest was a great accent piece to coordinate with big sis. These two are ready for the coming season in their stylish new outfits.

 For my girl look, I used the maxi option of the Lil Luxe Dress from Lil Luxe Collection. I used the long sleeves and pockets from the Starlight City Dress and cinched the long sleeves with elastic at the wrist to compliment the boho-vibe of the dress. I raised the scoop back a couple of inches to make it a bit more modest. I used a stretch charmeuse from Joann's that has gorgeous drape and colors. To complete the look I did a faux fur vest with a hidden hook and eye closure. I used my favorite tee pattern, the City Park tee from Hey June, as a base and drafted my vest from there. It's lined in a beautiful soft tweed suiting and she's already asked if she can wear it with "everything"! For my boy look, I used Shwin Designs BBC Vest as my main piece. In a soft plaid flannel with leather accents, it's the perfect fall layering piece for him. It's lined in cream soft stretch denim for structure. His pants are modified Moto Maxx pants from Love Notions. I stole his dad's favorite worn khakis to create soft woven joggers. I diamond quilted the knees and lined them in the flannel from the vest to make them extra warm and comfortable. The hooded tee is a slimmed-down Made for Mermaids Rowan Raglan. Fall means lots of evenings and Saturdays at the soccer field so the 'Soccer Legend' was appropriate for our newest soccer star. Gracious Threads--Autumn Dreams

Thank you so much for having me back again this week! This week I created a look for my 9 year old titled 'Autumn Dreams'. Because she doesn't grow out of clothing near as fast, I like to spend the time sewing those special details and adding more complicated construction techniques that I normally skip for my toddler. She is wearing a button up shirt based on the Sisboom Ethan. I narrowed the shoulders and created shaping in the side seams for a more feminine fit. I moved the pleat to the center back, added a second pocket, and fussy cut the yoke so that the arrows are perfectly aligned. I'm especially proud of the sleeve placket! I used a beautifully soft chambray for the shirt. The layering tee is my own pattern, the Chestnut Tee, with elbow length sleeves. I cut gold heat transfer vinyl with my Silhouette with the words "vive l'automne", french for 'long live autumn' because everything sounds much more sophisticated in Canada's other official language! The bag is self drafted. It is a messenger style with long and short straps. It closes with a turn lock and has matching brass hardware on both handles. There are two pockets; a patch pocket is on the back and a zipper welt pocket is inside.

 

 The pants are sewn from a heavier weight dark red denim. They are self drafted and feature a zipper fly, angled front slant pockets, back welt pockets (picture of these on my blog), and side cargo pocket finished with gold trim. I sewed the self drafted tuque (warm beanie hat for those who don't speak Canadian!) from an old sweater I had. The coat was the most time consuming item. I started with Ottobre 6/2012 # 29 Naavakuusi. The bodice is redrafted to fit my daughter's narrow frame better, and I drafted a one piece yoke that sits over the shoulder seam. Details like the storm flap, toggle buttons, and cross stitched tabs really elevate the classic duffle. It is fully lined with kasha lining (flannel backed satin) and all the hems and facings are understitched by hand with a prick stitch. The outer fabric is a wool with a metallic gold thread running through it. The photographs were taken by some old wooden graineries on my neighbour's property. PenSebRox--Autumn Explorer

Since we live pretty much surrounded by the New England wilderness and Seb loves this time of the year for collecting natural objects while exploring, I wanted to put together an outfit inspired by explorers of the Victorian era, lumberjacks, and L.L. Bean. Not wanting to seem to winter-like with heavy layers, instead I used warm fabrics with rich textures to invoke a feeling of the start of colder weather.

The french terry used for the romper and self-drafted hat, has all the texture of a tweeded wool but with comfort of a knit. Both the golden yellow side and the taupe/brown side suited the theme well enough that I used a mixture of both sides throughout. For the romper, I used Shwin Design's Mag & Lil with both the front and back necklines modified to a deep scoop, added contrasting patch pockets, and added a reversible lining. The other side of the romper is a brown heathered french terry with exposed stitching in a variegated thread consisting of shades of brown and dark green. I used rich red thermal and a jersey with a nature inspired bear print for the self-drafted Henley. The print has the oranges of yellows of the theme description and a few other colors that I felt helped the autumn colors pop. Since this is an autumn inspired look after all, I just had to include plaid flannel! The self-drafted messenger bag is the perfect for holding any objects that Seb finds while out exploring. The flannel is backed with a mid-weight interfacing and lined with wool felt to give the bag more of casual loose structure like you find with a canvas rucksack. To add to the natural look, stitching is exposed, the strap is upcycled from a leather belt, and the brass connecting hardware was salvaged. The front flap closes with two buttons that are part of a button collection that has been passed down for generations. As a kid, I always thought they looked like acorns! Wild + Wanderful--Well Dressed Fox

Autumn is, hands down, my favorite season. The smells, the foods, the denim, the colors, the flannel and plaid everything...you name it. I wanted to create Louis an outfit that was useable as separates, fell within the realms of the theme, and incorporated his playful style. I think we did just that. (Ps...I'm so excited to be back for the second week of Project Run + Play! Thanks for keeping me around!) As a full-blown pumpkin addict, I couldn't help but choose orange to be my color. Louis' favorite animal just so happens to be a fox, and since foxes are orange, it was a match for sure! 

There were three pieces total that made up Lou's fox attire. First was the P4P Jolly Roger Raglan, on which I hand stitched this cute little fox face. It's such a simple and sweet detail and I can't help but love the button eyes and nose. Next up was the P4P Lumberjack shirt with a few adjustments. I love knit cuff sleeves for jackets, so that was a quick change. I also sliced and diced the hood piece so I could attach some fox ears and a face. Louis has been consistantly wearing his jacket to school during chilly mornings since I made it for him and he beams with pride when compliments come his way. He also loves to "howl" like a fox while wearing it. Suffice to say, kiddo likes his jacket. Ha! The third piece I made was some P4P Cpt Comfort Jeans in a darkwash denim. I added some roll-up cuffs with the same fabric as his jacket so the whole look was cohesive. But there are enough colors within the plaid that he'll be able to wear these and match to a ton of items within his wardrobe. All in all, I am super happy with our "Well Dressed Fox" look and I hope you are too! Sew and Tell Project--Autumn at Hogwarts

 Hey guys! I'm so excited to share my autumn inspired look with you all! This challenge was exciting for me because it allowed me to work with some of my favorite things--autumn colors, textures, themes, and my tween! The tween demographic is somewhat neglected in the pattern making world; they're just at such an awkward stage. Fit is often off, and styles are too young or too old. I've gotten pretty good at adapting, though, because she's still my baby, and she still loves her mama made things! I decided right off that I needed to use this darling Harry Potter panel from Backstitch Fabrics; the colors are perfect, and there's just something about Hogwarts that always makes me think of fall. I didn't want the outfit to appear costume-y, just young, fun, and stylish. I chose to make a pleated skirt to echo the Hogwart's uniforms, a blazer in place of robes, and a t-shirt to keep it casual. I started with Made for Mermaids' Rowan Raglan pattern, altering it by adding a slight V at the neck, color blocking, and fun striped sleeves. I self drafted this box pleated skirt with a surprise panel of knife pleats in the back and an invisible zipper in the side. 

 

This jacket, though. This, my friends, was a labor of love. This is a Burda Style pattern that I fell in love with. It included no seam allowance, and the instructions were all on one sheet of paper with no photos or illustrations. I've converted wedding gowns to first communion dresses, but this blazer challenged my sewing skills...and my sanity. I chose an embossed velvet for the exterior and lined it with red satin. Velvets are so in this fall, and I love the texture that the burnout brings. The jacket features bound buttonholes on the lapels and sleeves and inseam pockets. If you want to count them, there are 15. FIFTEEN bound buttonholes and buttons; that's a lot of hand sewing! My daughter chose some awesome metal buttons for the front, and I talked her into something a little more sedate for the sleeves. My kiddo loves her fun--and stylish--fall outfit, and I love that I can make her something that perfectly matches her personality. Stop by the Sew and Tell Project to find out more!

Voting on the designs opens this morning and will close on Thursday night at 8 pm MT.  It is one vote per IP address....and this season we are trying something new....we are hiding the public vote.  That is 50% of their scores...so make sure you vote for your favorite, they need your support. We will announce the winner on Friday morning and unfortunately send the first person home.  Now, enough reading this, and get to the fantastic outfits below!

Gracious Threads--Casual Toddler Style

Hi all! Today I'm thrilled to share with you my Pokemon inspired look for a toddler. My 3 year old is nice and warm in a quilted nylon puffer vest. I drafted the vest myself, but borrowed the hood from Ottobre 4/2015 # 19. The back yoke is sewn from faux leather and the leather is also used to trim the patch pockets. The hood is detachable with large metal snaps. I lined the vest with a super soft wool flannel that I felted in the dryer. The vest closes with a 2 way separating zipper. Under his vest is a long sleeve crew neck tee that I drafted myself (my Chestnut Tee & Dress pattern) that features an adorable Charmander cotton lycra panel. 

The jeans were drafted by combining my own Gracious Threads Everest Pants pattern with the Skinny Jeans by Titchy Threads. I distressed all the seams with sandpaper before topstitching with a white jean thread. I've included a ton of details to these jeans: brass rivets, a functional fly with brass button and zipper, adjustable buttonhole elastic, and bias enclosed side seams so that there is a pop of colour when the cuffs are rolled up. The back pockets are cut out of 2 pieces and are appliqued with a lightening bolt, just like Pikachu's tail. The backpack is self drafted and sewed out of a thick cotton twill. The bag is interfaced with a heavy interfacing and keeps its shape. I lined the back straps with 1/2" foam and include an adjustable buckle and reflective trim. Watch for a free pattern for the bag on my blog this fall! Finally I sewed up a quick Pikachu softie for my son to keep in his backpack. I drew it out myelf and it is sewn from fleece with an appliqued face. I encourage you to head on over to my blog for way more photographs and information about each piece. 

Pensebrox--Pokemon Trainer SEB

We are big fans of Pokémon here! It only seemed natural for the Week 1: Pokémon theme to create a Trainer inspired look for Seb. He already considers himself to be something of a Pokémon expert and the athletic tinged street style you often see the Trainers wearing lends itself well to boys clothing. The jacket Seb wears is self-drafted starting from a basic bodice sloper. I wanted the design to be practical with sporty features such as a funnel neck to keep out the chill, side seam pockets, and easy to move in raglan sleeves, but also stylish with the slight exaggeration to the neck design, the stylized Pokéball that functions as a third pocket and the fun color accents. My fabric choices were ponte for the main body, scuba for the accents, and closed sports mesh for the lining, wanting to capture both practicality and style.

Seb requested that part of the outfit be inspired my Clemont, his favorite Trainer from the series, and that prompt lead to the design for the t-shirt! I started with Shwin's Anytime At All Tee that I modified the length on and customized the sleeves with color-blocking similar to the details you see on the oversuit that Clemont wears. Since Clemont is something of a nerd and inventor, the striped jersey was chosen for the main body because it reminded me of notebook paper and I free motion stitched his catchphrase, "The future is now, thanks to science!", onto the fabric like a hastily scribbled note. In the more recent Nintendo Pokémon games I often noticed the pants were pretty simple with some stylish touches. Wanting to follow a similar aesthetic, I started with Blank Slate Pattern's Clean Slate Pants. I adjusted the sizing, changed the welt pockets to patch pockets, and added leg detail by blocking panels of the same gray pinstripe denim, cut on the bias. Wild & Wanderful--Who's that Poke-Trainer?

It took basically everything in my power to not make a full blown cosplay look for the Pokemon theme.  I decided to dial back my excitement and instead created something that is wearable as a full outfit, but also as separate pieces mixed with other clothing Louis already owns.  What's more "Pokemon Inspired" than turning your child into a walking, talking PokeBall?  A little colorblocking and appliquéing was all it took to turn the Patterns for Pirates YoHo Henley into a 6-year-old approved tee.  I really wanted to make a head-to-toe look for Louis so I decided to make a replica of Ash Ketchum's hat, using the Street Kred hat by Apple + Fig.  Louis sometimes thinks that he wants to wear a baseball cap but then changes his mind quickly...so the hat became more of a prop than an actual wardrobe piece for this shoot.  Kids, ya know?

By far, the pants are the show-stopper for me.  I used the Patterns for Pirates Playground Pants as a base, slimmed the legs, added a drawstring and pockets, and turned them into jogger-style sweats.  Big pockets = happy kiddo.  I borrowed the pocket idea from a pair of shorts I'd made a couple of years ago from Rabbit Rabbit Creations.  They are over-exaggerated and allow for some fun pattern mixing, and I loved being able to add the licensed fabric as the pocket lining.  Louis has been crazy about Pokemon for a while now, but the new game has sent him over the top.  Blue being his favorite color, he hastily joined Team Mystic and I couldn't help but add the team-specific detail and the word "Trainer" down his left leg.  If he didn't go to a school that required uniforms, I'm pretty sure Lou would try and wear these pants every day.  But to be honest, I would too.  I kind of wish I'd made them in my size.  Please CLICK HERE to see more of this cute Poke-Trainer, as well as to get pattern and fabric links to everything used for this look.  Thanks so much to the PR+P team for letting me play along this season!  It's been a fabulous experience!  

Sew and Tell Project--Gotta Catch Some ZZZ's...

The Pokemon Go craze has hit the nation - it seems like everyone is obsessed with idea that you "Gotta Catch Them All!" Well, all the running around can be exhausting. I decided that some comfy Pokemon-inspired pajamas were in order because we all "Gotta Catch Some ZZZ's!" Straying from many typical pajama styles, I created comfortable pieces that are perfect for active kids who are too excited about the new day ahead of them to bother changing before they are off on another adventure. After all, you never know when Charmander might appear in your backyard! That is exactly why I added a cozy and warm jacket to the ensemble. With a jacket this fun, it is sure to be grabbed on the way out the door!   

 Can you tell how much he loves the whole set? It is all so perfect for lounging around the house, camping, or just everyday pajamas! To create this look, I used patterns from three of my favorite designers. The pajama shirt is a long sleeve version of the Streamline Tee by New Horizons Designs. I used HTV to add a fun message - "Gotta Catch Some ZZZ's!" The pajama pants are a warm fleece version of the pants from the Moto Maxx Set by Love Notions. The knee patches were just begging for some creative color-blocking so I went with red and white - just like a pokeball! The High Five Hoodie from Peekaboo Pattern Shop was a fantastic starting point for the jacket. From the front, with the hood down, it just looks like a regular yellow and black jacket. For a surprise - put up the hood, turn around and then - Pikachu! As an added bonus, a pokeball pajama keeper adds the final touch. I started with the pokeball pillow pattern from the blog Sew Desu Ne? by Choly Knight. I added a hidden zipper under the black stripe and constructed the interior in such a way that it is fully lined. The hidden layers of batting keep the exterior smooth while the interior can hold all sorts of things from pajamas to special treasures! Inspinration--Serena's newest look

 When this season's themes were announced, I did a little happy dance. We love Pokemon, Netflix does not have all the 900 episodes (!), so after seeing the first two seasons, my kids started watching the most recent one. Ash and Pikachu are the main characters but the rest of his team has changed. One of his new team members is Serena. During the series she drastically changed her look, and I love the new version. It is girly but tough, like my middle daughter, who supports the same kind of messy hair style. 

 

Inspired by Serena's a pink dress with a white collar and blue ribbon, I made pink dress with a white yoke and a (light) blue button. The original dress is totally open on the front (with a black top underneath), but I chose for a hidden button placket which gives the same feel, without showing skin. The sleeveless halter cardigan (I am curious if that would work in real life) plus hat idea, got turned into a hooded bolero. The black bias finish is a tribute to the black top and black stripe on Serena's hat. Serena's black knee socks became black tights. I adjusted the Wild and Free louche pants, in such a way that the knees now feature Pancham (Serena's pokemon). For much more info and pictures, hop over to my blog post.

 

Sew Sophie Lynn--What a Catch!!

 It's here, it's really here! I'm jumping up and down with excitement that I get to share my first look with you all! I have to admit I was stumped with this weeks theme. Amazingly not one of my kids has been a Pokemon fan so I immediately turned to my pal Google. I was inspired by the classic Pokemon character Pikachu and the ever important Pokeball for my looks. I went simple and feminine and know that these are pieces that will get worn long after this challenge is over. 

I used the Blake Dress from Mingo and Grace for the base of my Pikachu look. I found the coolest yellow and black zipper that runs the full length of the back. To add more texture we added leggings made with gorgeous stretch lace. Topped with a detachable black lace collar, the outfit is chic but also playground ready! My little Pokeball is looking every bit the rock star in Sloane Tuxedo pants from Violette Fields Threads with a dazzling black sequin stripe. The top is a Calla Lily Crop Top from Jennuine Designs with added length and modified hem and a facing instead of full lining. My love affair with KAM snaps is evident up the back and the hem is finished with bias tape and the cutest ball fringe. We had a blast when we headed downtown for this shoot.
