Meet the Designers: Shannon from Little Kids Grow

Hi everyone! I'm Shannon, wife to one, mom to six (6), and blogger at LittleKidsGrow.com.

I've always loved clothing and design and have fancied myself a "closet" designer since I was around 5 or 6 when I would hand sew purses and accessories for my mom or create brown paper bag fashions out of store grocery bags (I know. Crazy, right?). Instead of playing with dolls, I'd spend hours coloring, cutting out and taping together "runway" fashions and then parade through the house donning my latest creation. Despite my early interest in design, I didn't encounter my first sewing machine until my teens when a local seamstress offered to give me a few basic lessons. I hated it! Too slow! I couldn't sit still long enough to sew a few basic stitches much less a skirt or dress. I tried it again in college, but again, I just couldn't do it. It wasn't until I got married and had kids that my relationship with my sewing machine finally clicked. I grew patience, go figure! I've been sewing consistently now for about 5 years. I love designing, flat pattern drafting and draping. I have a great appreciation for vintage clothing construction, unusual fabrics and textures. My biggest challenge now is bumping up my sewing skills, so that I can create the designs I've had swimming around in my head forever. I'm hoping that Project Run & Play will push me out of my comfort zone and challenge me to rise above those nagging insecurities that we all face from time to time. For me life is pretty simple: Do the best you can. Treat others the way you want to be treated and have lots and lots of fun! Engage, beautify, soar! This is how I try to live my life. Everything else tends to fall in place.

  3. We were so similar as kids! I would do the same thing with dolls. My mom was too impatient to teach me how to sew, so I watched her cut, sew everyday, until I was 15 and took a home-ec class in high school. I never looked back. I have been at it for 30 plus years now. When I had my two daughters, I sewed non stop. I have always loved children's clothing, and now I do a small line on etsy that fulfills my love of sewing and children's clothing.

I can't wait to see what you make :)

  10. I find that sewing is easier to create with because it's way faster than knitting or crocheting! I can't stand how slow knitting or crocheting is, which is why I sew! ahahah. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

    1. I've tried to knit and crochet. My knitting needles have been in my closet for years, and I use my crochet hook as a multipurpose tool. (It really is pitiful.)
