Sponsor Spotlight: Blank Slate Patterns

Every Thursday during May and June we want you to get to know our sponsors a little better.  Up today is Melissa from Blank Slate Patterns!

Here is Melissa....

I'm Melissa, and I'm the designer behind Blank Slate Patterns. I have two boys, ages 3 and 5, and I design first and foremost for them because boys deserve handmade love too! My husband is a high school football coach, and we live in Texas, so I really relate to Friday Night Lights.

I've been sewing since I was 3, and for 12 years worked in the theatre where I constantly had to create costumes and patterns for them. I even got to teach sewing to my students, so my blog was a natural offshoot of the teacher in me. After I had my first son, I looked high and low for a blazer pattern for him in toddler sizes, and there wasn't one. So I drafted it, posted it on the blog, others expressed interest, and my first pattern was born.

I really love t-shirts and how easy they are to whip out; I like pulling different fabrics together to create "frankentees" as my husband calls them. I also enjoy sewing for myself, particularly dresses and skirts.

For many years in school I wanted to be a writer, and through my blog now I am. I love that I've been able to grow the blog and then the pattern business hand in hand and create a job for myself that is creatively fulfilling and gives me the flexibility to be there for my kids. I do miss my students, but I also feel incredibly blessed and lucky to be where blogging and designing has taken me. Even two years ago I never imagined this would be my job, but I love that it is.

  2. I love Blank Slate Patterns. I recently brought the Pristine Swing Dress and am just waiting for my fabric to arrive in the post so I can get sewing!
