Mad for Plaid---It's Time to Vote!

Lexi Made---Polka Dots and Plaid
It's week 3 at Project Run & Play and I am honored to be able to share with you what I have made! It's all about plaid this week which is a perfect fabric to go along with my fall/winter wardrobe goal for this season. Sometimes I think plaid can feel a little stuffy so I wanted to be sure to make a classy yet fun and age appropriate outfit for my girls who turn 3 in January. I tried to accomplish this by mixing in some polka dots, sequins, corduroy and even a little leather. I love to mix fabrics that might not seem like they would work together and try to make a fun cohesive look. Luckily, my outfit turned out just as I had hoped! For the pants I used a plaid fabric I found that has a little bit of stretch. They have an elastic waist to allow for easy pulling on and off.  For the front of the pants I added two little pleats and two little pockets so the girls have a place for their little treasures and added tiny belt loops to hold a leather belt I tied in a bow at the waist.  The sweater is a soft sweater knit.  I made a peter pan collar out of black stretch sequin material. For the jacket I wanted to make a peplum inspired jacket but since I already made a jacket with ruffle layers for week 1 I wasn't sure if I should do another ruffle jacket, but I kept dreaming about this design and had to do it. The jacket has ruffles from the collar all the way around the back to the other side. I then added two more layers of ruffles to the bottom to make a little bit of a high/low look. I used three vintage looking metal buttons for the front and then added two corduroy patches to the elbows. For the sweater I used the black sequin material but added it to the shoulders instead of a collar.  To complete the look I made a pair of soft knit leggings. For more details on the look as well as more photos visit me at my blog HERE. Thanks for looking!

Emma & Mona---Lady M.
Hello everybody, please meet Lady M.
Lady M. is turning eight while the voting is on.  She loves horses and dancing.  She likes to cuddle with the ones she loves.  When she grows up, she wants to be a photographer. So she often practices taking pictures with mommy's camera.  Today, she's the model.
I've made a coat for lady M.  A very soft one with fleece on the inside and fake fur.  I designed the pattern myself. It's a classic model that reminds me of great fashion icons like Jacky Kennedy.  On the inside I worked with supersoft fleece. It gives lady M. such a comfortable feeling. She wants to live in her new coat.  The collar is made out of fake fur. When it's very cold outside, she can pull it up and it will keep her ears warm.  She also got a matching beret.
The pockets are hidden in the seam. I like sewing invisible pockets and did you noticed the detail on the back?  A little bow.  You will find more pictures on my blog, emmaenmona.blogspot.com.
Thanks for voting!  Griet

Caila Made---Rad in Plaid

I'm so excited to share my week three creation with you today! I decided to have a little fun with this challenge, because as you know, it's easy to pigeon-hole plaid. But here in California, plaid is popular for more than winter coats and pleated skirts. Here, we like wearing it to RIDE! I made a shift tunic for Abby using a linen plaid cut on the bias for the front, and a vintage floral print for the back. I really like the look of these two different fabrics blocked together, vintage and modern. To keep it youthful, I gave it a petal hem rather than the traditional kind. The neck is bound with bias tape, which ties above a keyhole in the front and the arm openings are bound with bias facings.

Abby's purple leggings and knee pads complete her plaid skater look. Instead of hemming the leggings, I bound the legs with polka dot fabric and used hot pink thread. Hot pink zig zags are so fun! I also stenciled some flowers onto the side of the calf because I knew Abby would love that detail. The plaid knee pads were made using scraps from the tunic and they are hot pink on the back side (which you can't see, alas). The knee pads are padded with lots of batting to keep them soft and add some protection for my little skater girl's knees. They fasten in the back with velcro and black elastic for ease in putting on and taking off.  Can you tell Abby had a lot of fun playing skater girl in the photo shoot??

Sewing Like Mad---The Little Queen of Plaid

May I present to you my Little Queen of Plaid.  When I think plaid, I think wool, autumn, cosiness and warmth but also country life, horses, fields aaaaand a gold crown - naturally! There is more about that association on my blog.

I have made four items for this challenge.
A pair of wool non-traditional plaid culottes, fully lined and with cotton facings inside for hemming and on the inside waistband, since we all know kids hate scratchy materials on their skin. They have these fabulous ruffle side welt pockets inspired from Go To Pattern's Sturdy Hall Jacket, toddler friendly elastic waist and belt loops.  A cotton shirt with a great neck shirring detail, a front buttoned placket and a row of shirring on the sleeve hem to add volume.  A vest made with pre-quilted gold material, little ruffle 'sleeves' and piping all around. I especially like the detail that the piping in the armhole goes all the way around - from under the arm to outside of ruffle in one continuous piping piece. Yup, sewing geek dot com.  And let's not forget The Little Queen of Plaid's crown (okay, hat). Made from the Oliver + s' bucket hat pattern but with a more narrow brim and crown shaped side pieces.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your support and kind comments on my blog!
