Meet the Designers: Heidi from Elegance and Elephants

Today we are meeting Heidi (who we affectionately know as Homemade by Heidi) from Elegance and Elephants.....

Name: Heidi Kettner
Spouse: Michael...he's amazing in so many ways, including having a critical eye like Tim Gunn, but even better taste!
Children: Tobias, age 4, and Anja, almost 2...I had no idea how much I would enjoy motherhood...being their mommy is the GREATEST!
Design Aesthetic: Classic, clean, simple, sometimes a little mod, always a little vintage.
Number of Sewing Classes Taken: One...in grade 10.  I made a pair of black, corduroy MC Hammer pants.  That should give you a good idea of how long ago I was in junior high.  Everything else I've learned about sewing is from my mom, books, online tutorials, and turning clothing inside out.
Favourite Children's Clothing Brands: BonpointOlive JuiceIl GufoHucklebones, & Fore!! Axel & Hudson...I browse, I drool, I pin.
Favourite Adult Fashion House: I'm inspired by many, but I love Christian Dior the most.
Where I Sew: In the corner of our family room (known by our children as the 'Toy Room') on an huge antique desk passed down by my father-in-law.  It has all kinds of neat drawers and cubbyholes for my notions (and even a few secret compartments)!
Music Playing When I Sew:  Always the UK 1940s Radio Station...strange, I know, but I'm a big World War II history buff, and I'm totally inspired by the 40s (& 50s, too).  I love jazz & swing, and find it fascinating to listen to the original radio programs from that era.  Also helps me remember how fortunate we are to live in freedom...something I know I often take for granted.
What I Sew With:  Two Kenmore machines (sewing & serger) that were gifts from Michael.  They aren't fancy, but I love them.  He also bought me my children's dress form which really helped bring out the designer in me.
Years Blogging: It'll be one year in November...I'm a baby in Blogland.
How Excited I Am to Design for PR&P: EXTREMELY!  (and intimidated by all the talent...but so ready to be inspired!)

  4. Loves this intro...especially the links to your inspiration, I hadn't heard of any of those brands before! Had a question about the children's form: what size did you decide on when you got it? I'm thinking about getting one, but don't know what size to get.
