Meet the Designers: The Shaffer Sisters

Hi Project Run & Play Readers,

We are three Sisters who, while growing up, shared a room, clothes, and lots of late nights giggling. Out of this tight space developed 3 unusual nicknames (Al, Jo & Scary) and friendship of a lifetime. Growing up we were introduced to the thrill of a last minute sewing project as we spent the 2 weeks leading up to the fair, racing through all 3 labor intensive 4-H sewing projects. This rigorous training exercise prepared us for our future career of blogging as it has helped us reach number of blogging deadlines in the most inopportune moments. We have improved since those elementary days on trimming strings and pressing our items before showcasing (for which we always got docked down by the judges).

Through the births of nearly a dozen children and several cross-state moves we find ourselves still as close as we were in that small space. Two years and 10 moves ago, Al and Scary were sitting around feeding their newborn babies talking about sewing projects and their favorite blogs. Scary said to Al, "Someday, I want to compete on Project Run & Play." Al said, "Well what would it take to do that?" We determined that we should see if we could handle the pressure by sewing along with each of the six weeks. We had a number of close calls, but in that short time we were hooked. We went to work trying to make it happen. Since that fall, no matter how busy we are with kids, moving, cooking, laundry it is not uncommon to hear a sewing machine humming in the background of a phone conversation.
Jo is the oldest and she is the mom of 6, 5 boys (11,9,8,5, almost 1) & 1 girl (3). Her great artistic mind reminds us to keep pushing until the masterpiece is done. She approaches every sewing project from an out-of-the-box perspective and she shows no fear when approaching any project. Scary is the middle and is a mom of 2, 1 boy (4) & 1 girl (2). She is the fuel to the fire of our blog, she never stops working and pushing us to the next level. She is the sewing academic, enjoys learning new techniques. Al is the youngest and mom of 3, 2 girls (4, newborn) & 1 boy (2). She is our perfectionist, she never approaches a project unless she can knock it out of the park. Her mathematical/science driven mind help her understand the most complex design elements.

We are so grateful to the great community of Project Run & Play. Through the encouragement of so many of you, we have grown. We feel as though our sisterhood has been extended beyond our dynamic trio to sisters around the globe.

With Love,
Al, Jo & Scary

  1. Whoever thought of using the Venn Diagram...WOW. I learned so much about all three of you. It looks like there is a lot of love, learning, and sewing going on in your family. I'm looking forward to seeing your completed project for Week 1. I'm finishing up my project today for the sew along group. I have to mail it to Minnesota so my daughter can get pictures of my cartoon inspired outfit on my granddaughter. Good Luck.
