Meet the Designer: Sabra from Sew A Straight Line

Hi, I’m Sabra. I pronounce is “SAY-bra”, but answer to, and rarely correct anything close. Sew a Straight Line, though am much more active on Instagram.
I started my blog more than eight years ago as a way to document my New Year’s goal to learn to sew. Over the years, I have developed my sewing from an interest and hobby to a talent and skillset that I find invaluable. Even more important to me are the friendships I have forged through this online sewing community. I count many of the people I have met through blogging and social media as some of my greatest friends. My 2010 New Year’s resolution has grown and evolved into a defining part of my life, and I can’t imagine where I would be, or what I would be doing (or spending my money on) without the sewing world I have become a part of. I have four kids: three boys ages 15, 12, and 9, and one six year old daughter. One of my main motivations in wanting to learn to sew back in 2010 was my children. I wanted to make my three boys (all I had at the time) unique, cool things to wear. In eight years, I have sewn literally hundreds of items for kids and myself (and a little bit for my husband). For almost two years at one point, the kids and I went with purchasing only shoes, socks, and underwear new. Everything else was made by me. As my kids have gotten older, I haven’t sewn for them as much as I used to, focusing more on sewing for myself. But I still find my creativity at its peak when I am working with a more masculine style. I’m very excited for this opportunity of Project Run and Play to jump back into designing and sewing for my boys, with a bit for my daughter thrown in, too.
When I’m not sewing, I love to be outside. My husband of nearly 18 years and myself try to get out and hike and explore as often as we can. We sometimes drag the kids along, but it’s been fun, as the kids have gotten older, to go out with just the two of us and remember why we liked each back when we were young, kid-free, and well-rested. I also teach art part-time at the local elementary school. I told the students on my first day that I sew most of my clothing, and all year at least a couple ask each day if I made my outfit. I almost always have at least one thing on I’ve sewn. And knowing they will ask has motivated me to sew even more for myself, because it’s just fun to be able to say “Yep, I made this!” I hope it helps to motivate them to explore their own creative pursuits a bit more.
There is a special magic in making something and putting out into the world. I once wrote this regarding how I feel about sewing: “Sewing, and other creative arts, has such permanence. There are so many things that I do for my family every day that just don’t last. Dishes get put back in the sink dirty, laundry gets soiled and thrown back in the hamper, toys get dragged from their bins, and bums have to be wiped over and over and over.  When I make something for my family and friends, it lasts.  It’s a tangible piece of my love and appreciation for them in my life.  It’s cheesy, but I love that about sewing for others.” I no longer have any little bums to wipe, but the sentiment holds true. Maybe even more so with older kids. It means so much more when your child chooses to wear something you made, when they come home and tell you that their friends want to put in an order for a shirt just like theirs, and when they don’t think twice about placing their own requests for a custom made cosplay costume.
I feel like Project Run and Play celebrates that magic of sewing for kids and I am so excited to be a part of it this season. I’m excited to compete with people I’ve admired and been inspired by for years, and to meet and forge friendships with those new to me. And I’m incredibly excited to focus more on my sewing roots, sewing for the kids I love.

Meet the Designer: Kat from Sew Chibi Designs

This is so exciting! Hi there! I'm Kat from Sew Chibi Designs! I sew for my three muses (ages 10, 6, and 4). My goal is always to make something fun for them to wear! A lot of what I create is colorful, a little quirky, and playful! I'm driven by the squeals of delight and looks of surprise on my girls' faces when I share with them something I made for them.

Frequently, I collaborate with my girls because I find that, when I do, they love the results even more! We pull inspiration from just about everything and everywhere! We really hope you will enjoy the things we come up with too!

Recently, I started selling my digital sewing patterns and it's been a blast! My patterns are designed to be as simple or as full-on zany as you like; for girls and for boys! I also like to dabble in graphic design and I try to make the pattern instructions fun to follow as well!

Our family lives in Portland, Oregon where there is never a shortage of new things to discover! My husband and I love taking the girls on adventures any chance we get.

Being asked to participate in Project Run & Play is truly such an honor! Audrey, thank you so very much for this opportunity! I look forward to sharing my ideas and getting to know more about all of you as well!

Let's be friends! Click below to follow me at these places:

Meet the Designer: Liesel from It's Liesel

Hi, I'm Liesel and I blog at It's Liesel. I'm so excited to be a part of this season on PRP! I have followed for many seasons, and can't believe I'm not just watching this time. I'm eager and nervous, and can't wait to get started!

My parents taught me to sew when I was a girl, but I hated every minute of it. As a young adult, I was always working full time, and graduated college a week before my first daughter was born. Shortly after my second daughter was born, I became a stay at home mom, and had time to find a way to express my creativity. I enjoyed following several blogs, and started using lots of DIY tutorials to teach myself how to sew things, from baby leggings to carseat covers and more. About 4 years ago, I discovered PDF patterns, and went crazy with them! They make it so easy to learn new techniques, and produce amazing garments, my skills grew a lot through the many designers I used patterns from.

I have four children, with number five due this summer! My oldest two are girls, ages 10, and 8, and the youngest are boys, 5, and 3. We homeschool them, which is fun and chaotic! I have happily lived in Kansas most of my life. My husband is a huge support, and I am thankful for him. We have been married for almost 12 years.

If you want to follow me on instagram, I post my sewing and personal things there: @itsliesel

Meet the Designer: Candice from Candice Ayala

Candice Ayala is originally from the country of Belize, located in Central America. She spent the first 28 years of her life in Belize, and now presently resides in Los Angeles, California with her husband and two kids. She is an Administrative Assistant by day,a Serial Crafter, Sewing Blogger [CandiceAyala.com], Business Owner [SewingPortfolios.com], Host of #FabricFriyaaay and PDF Pattern Designer in all the times in between.

Now, she sews primarily for her daughter (affectionately referred to as #thespiritedone) and on occasion her oldest (affectionately referred to as #theboycub). As a business owner she feels her life’s purpose is to create and foster a platform where all types of sewers can connect and collaborate with other sewers and sewing related businesses (worldwide) that would result in symbiotic relationships. She has been featured in Sew Sew Def and One Thimble Magazines. She is a content contributor for Michael Miller Fabrics and Califabrics and has just recently signed on as a brand influencer for Babylock Sewing.  She is excited to join Project Run & Play for Season 16!

Meet the Designer: Rachel from Violets and Jewels

prp bio

Hi, I'm Rachel Reece from Violets and Jewels Creations.  I am so excited to be apart of this seasons Project Run and Play. I can't wait to get started. A little about me, I'm married to my husband Ryan and to make our happy little family, we have our two girls (ages 4, 3). We live in the Central Valley of California, where everywhere you look you see almond orchards.

  prp

I have been sewing for over 25 years. As a young girl, I mostly made plain blankets and pillow cases. In high school, for my final project in Home-Ec, I made myself my prom dress no pattern just something I saw in a magazine. That grew to making more clothes, started quilting and then just stopped sewing until I had my girls. My two girls have been my inspiration. I have been pattern testing and just love the process of that. Now I get to participate in Project Run and Play!

Season 16 Celebrity Judges

It is such a great honor to bring you the celebrity judges for Season 16.  Each one of these talented ladies have attained celebrity status in the sewing community, and it's such a privilege to have them with us.  In order of appearance, please welcome these amazing ladies.

Katy Dill is a very old friend to Project Run & Play!  She was a designer on Season 1, and won her Season!  Since that time she's supported Project Run & Play in many ways.  Katy's home base is her No Big Dill blog where she beautifully sews and creates her way through life with her family of 5 girls and a boy.  Be sure to follow No Big Dill on Instagram where her feed brings you daily inspiration in black and white and a rainbow of color.  Please join me in welcoming Katy back to Project Run & Play.

It's a delight to have Kelly of True Bias guest judging this Season!  Kelly designs wildly popular patterns for women, and has adapted quite a few of them for children, much to the relief of sewists everywhere!  You can find Kelly at True Bias where she shares sewing tutorials, projects, knitting, sew alongs, all with her amazing fashion sense.  With a background in pattern making and the New York Fashion Institute of Technology, it's an honor to have her evaluating the designers' work!  Be sure to follow Kelly on Instagram for all the sewing inspiration you need.

Everyone who is active in the Indie sewing community knows Adrianna Appl of Hey June Handmade.  Whether you're sewing for yourself, your child, or (a much needed addition to the sewing world) for your teen or tween, you can find everything you need from Hey June Patterns!  Adrianna has been a long time supporter of Project Run & Play also, and the designers love to win her patterns.  Follow Adrianna on Instagram here.

Megan Nielsen designs mega popular patterns for women and children too.  She comes to us from the other side of the world, in Australia!  If you've ever sewn a Megan Nielsen pattern, then you know what a professional she is, and what a great privilege for Project Run & Play to have her review the designer looks.  Be sure to head over to Megan Nielsen for sewing inspiration, tutorials, patterns, tips,  inspiration and more!  Oh, and be follow Megan Nielsen on Instagram for contemporary wardrobe essentials for you and your child!

The judging format is as follows:

1/3 score = celebrity guest judge of the week
1/3 score = public voting
1/3 score = panel of past Project Run & Play designers shown below

This scenario casts light on the quality of the designer's work rather than their popularity.  This will hopefully ensure a positive experience for everyone, and the prizes awarded fairly on merit, rather than size of following.

Come back tomorrow to meet the 1st designer for Season 16!
