Toya for Project Nature Adventure

It's so exciting to present the 1st Project Run & Play fabric collection, Project Nature Adventure!  This week, we're introducing the designers who collaborated to create this collection, and giving sneak peeks of their designs.

Today we're introducing Toya of Made by Toya, one of the fabric designers for Project Nature Adventure.

Hi - I'm Toya an illustrator and educator from London, UK with a passion for making. I have been sewing on and off most of my life, and now mostly sew for my two children and myself.  Getting involved with this collection was a lovely way of combining my interests and a great opportunity to make new connections with the other designers.

"Land Marks"

The theme of nature adventures was so much fun to work with that I struggled to narrow down my ideas; but approached all the designs through the medium of ink as it is a firm favourite in both illustration commissions and education projects. In the end two of my final designs were inspired by song lyrics. Land Marks draws on "My Little Welsh Home", a song which I sung to my children as babies, the first line of which is "I am dreaming of the mountains of my home" which conjures up memories of the beautiful landscapes of Snowdonia and beyond. The joy of mark making is also referenced in the design's name.

"Twiglets"

The design for Twiglets is a celebration of the humble stick - a source of many games - nest/den building, flag waving, fetch playing etc. etc. and a bit of nature that we can enjoy even living in large and busy city. The song that sprung to mind, as I was drawing the design, is from a popular children's TV show with a catchy tune and only the lyrics 'stick, stick, sticky stick' on repeat. Needless to say once it's in your head it's never leaving.

Seeing the designs come together and receiving the printed fabric for the first time was a real joy, and sewing up samples allowed me to make clothes that will be suitable for our own adventure ad we set off for a camping trip in California and Oregon this summer!

I'm hoping the designs in the collection might resonate with some of your memories and associations with nature and adventures too.

"Adventure Mapped"

Toya also took all our designs and incorporated them into the main print for the Nature Adventure Theme.  Isn't it an amazing print?  Are you ready to get your hands on some of this fabric???

We'll see you next week when we'll share what we've created using these special fabrics, and preorders will open so YOU can get some of this amazing collection too!.

Delia for Project Nature Adventure

It's so exciting to present the 1st Project Run & Play fabric collection, Project Nature Adventure!  This week, we're introducing the designers who collaborated to create this collection, and giving sneak peeks of their designs.  Next week we'll share what we've created using these special fabrics, and preorders will open so YOU can get some of this amazing collection too!.

Today we're introducing Delia of Delia Creates, one of the fabric designers for Project Nature Adventure.

Hi! I'm Delia. I'm a mom of three and creative blogger at www.deliacreates.com. When my two oldest boys were still in diapers I got the itch to teach myself how to sew. Over nine years later, that curiosity has turned into a passion and a business, and not just for sewing. I love exploring new mediums and was thrilled to be able to incorporate some of them in this design process, which is also a new medium for me. It has been such a privilege to learn the ropes of fabric design with a great group of makers.

"Tide Pools"

Both of my designs are inspired by my home in Washington state. As a PNW transplant, I completely fell in love with the landscapes in this area and the adventurous lifestyle it inspires. I started a 100 days project of doodling possible future fabric designs (I only got to day 30 ha!), never really believing any of them would actually become fabric. I ended up turning one of those designs, inspired by the beloved tide pools near our home, into my very first block print. Two years later, that block print is now one of two of the fabrics I have designed for this collection! Talk about an adventure! ;)

"Binoculars"

I hope this collection inspires the adventurous spirit in you as well, in creative endeavors or on the trail!

xo, Delia

Lindsay for Project Nature Adventure

It's so exciting to present the 1st Project Run & Play fabric collection, Project Nature Adventure!  This week, we're introducing the designers who collaborated to create this collection, and giving sneak peeks of their designs.  Next week we'll share what we've created using these special fabrics, and preorders will open so YOU can get some of this amazing collection too!

Today we're introducing Lindsay of PA Country Crafts, one of the fabric designers for Project Nature Adventure.

Hi! My name is Lindsay and I am a mother of six- five girls and their very outnumbered big brother! We live on a little wanna-be farm in Pennsylvania- PA as we call it around here.  I substitute teach and have a B.S. in Chemistry. While working on my degree, after a very tough semester, I sold back all of my old textbooks and bought the only sewing machine I could afford. Sewing was my stress relief that summer as I taught myself to quilt. When my first daughter was born I decided to continue my mother-in-law's tradition of sewing Easter dresses. Through the years, sewing has continued to be both therapeutic and a creative challenge. I also do a lot of other crafts including basket weaving, crochet, and painting.

"Clover Chains"

We spend a lot of time outdoors and my girls love to collect wildflowers. I love when tiny hands hold out bouquets of weeds picked just for me! Clover chains are often adorning necks, heads, and my house. Wildflowers are a big part of our adventures!

"Wildflower Surprise"

First, I sketched some wildflowers in a simple, botanical line drawing style. Then, I traced them with a sharpie, scanned them, and began to edit on my computer. The clover chains went through several variations before I decided on simple circles. Eventually I also decided to add hidden elements to the wildflower design- ladybugs, ants, bees, butterflies, and four-leaf clovers. My children notice tiny details when we go on adventures, thanks to their short perspective and slow pace. I wanted the fabric to spark that same curiosity!

Lisa for Project Nature Adventure

It's so exciting to present the 1st Project Run & Play fabric collection, Project Nature Adventure!  This week, we're introducing the designers who collaborated to create this collection, and giving sneak peeks of their designs.  Next week we'll share what we've created using these special fabrics, and preorders will open so YOU can get some of this amazing collection too!

Today we're introducing Lisa of Mabey She Made It, one of the fabric designers for Project Nature Adventure.

Hi! I’m Lisa from Mabey She Made It.  I got my first sewing machine to use on paper crafts, but after just one fabric project I never looked back.  Sewing is my love language. I ’m also drawn to watercolor painting and designing, so designing watercolor fabric for this collection was a trifecta for me—and sewing it into clothes for my kids made it even better.  I love the process of pairing fabric and patterns that fit my kids’ personalities and preferences.  My sewing style leans toward classic, comfortable pieces they’ll reach for over and over in fabric they adore.

"Campsite"

When I think of adventure, I think of camping. There are pine trees, a tent, a fire (with s’mores of course), and a lot of nostalgia thrown in.  So when we chose the adventure theme, I knew I wanted to include these elements.  I also knew I wanted to use watercolor as my medium.  I painted each of the elements separately and then arranged them into a scene that felt somewhat like finding and setting up a campsite—placing each bit until it was complete.

Once I had my motif complete, I played around with how to arrange them. I love the ease of a tossed print, but have always been drawn to geometric prints as well.  Using the strong base of the motif, I was happy to realize that they’d make a great secondary design (triangles) when viewed further away, with the great details up close.

The small design of this motif is great for kids clothes and smaller pieces since the repeat is small.  It also incorporates a range of colors because of the watercolor, so finding a coordinate is a breeze.

"Treeline"

When you’re camping, hiking is almost a given. Working your way up a trail into a clearing, you almost always find a tree line at the edge of the meadow with a variety of trees, bushes, and grasses. It just seemed like a watercolor tree line had to be my second design.

I wanted the trees to be big and bold—almost like a patterned rugby stripe. It has a larger repeat, but can be used in small sections too.  Because of the scale and also the more subdued color palette, this print is great for simple, minimalist pieces that really show off the fabric rather than the cut lines.

Use this print as a stripe, as an accent piece on a colorblocked garment, or cut out your favorite clump of trees for a fun applique or pocket. Use the tree line print as a tuxedo stripe for a pair of joggers. And it pairs beautifully with many colors since green is a natural neutral.

Introducing...Project Nature Adventure

As you might have noticed, the Project Run & Play event we all know and love is growing and expanding.  Most of this new growth comes in the form of collaborations among former Project Run & Play designers.

Today we're proud to present you with the next collaboration...FABRIC!  Five designers from the Project Run & Play community have been working together behind the scenes to create a fabric collection specifically designed with children and their adventure-loving spirit in mind.

It's so exciting to present the 1st Project Run & Play fabric collection, Project Nature Adventure!  This week, we're introducing the designers who collaborated to create this collection, and giving sneak peeks of their designs.

Hi, I'm Audrey.  As the leader of Project Run & Play, I have the honor of coordinating these collaborations and participating in them too!  Tapping into the tremendous amount of talent represented among the role of past Project Run & Play designers for these collaborations is such a privilege!  One aspect of every Season is competition, but these designer collections show how these amazing women can work together to produce even greater things than they could individually.  It’s with great, great pride that I’ve been able to be a cheerleader and coordinator of this Designer Collection #2: Project Nature Adventure.

(Remember the incredible Designer Collection #1: Project Farmer's Market???)

The fabric I designed for this collaboration stems from my children's love of following animal tracks they find while exploring nature.  Sometimes they recognize the animal from the tracks, and sometimes it's a mystery they try to solve by reading the clues along the trail.

"Follow the Tracks"

This print uses 3 of the most common tracks we find locally.  As the tracks meander across the fabric, in and out of the watercolor stripes, adventures can be discovered if only you follow the tracks!

Next week we'll share what we've created using these special fabrics, explain the different fabrics substrates available, and preorders will open so YOU can create your own adventure with some of this amazing collection too!  Oh, and there's another jaw-dropping lookbook coming your way too...

Come back tomorrow to meet the next designer for Project Nature Adventure and to see a sneak peek of their designs!
