Back to School Tour: Skirtfixation x Raspberry Creek Fabrics
Meet the Week 3 Designers: Carin of Art Bella Creates and Tami of SewSophieLynn
We're really sad to announce that Gemia of Phat Quarters/Pier Avenue Patterns is unable to participate in Week 3 of Mini Season 2. Gemia and her family have suffered a truly heartbreaking loss and can use your support, thoughts and prayers.
However, we're awed by Tami of SewSophieLynn who agreed to step in at the last minute and participate.
After each of these talented designers introduce themselves, we have a SURPRISE for you...stay tuned! These ladies have been challenged with this theme:
Week 3: Comfort Encapsulated - No one knows what 2021 will bring, so prepare to be comfortable no matter what happens! With the Project Lounge Library patterns as your paints, and fabric as your canvas, art will soon appear!
Let's get to know Tami and Carin better:
Hi all! I'm Tami from SewSophieLynn and I'm humbled to be stepping in for Gemia this week. I was lucky enough to compete alongside Gemia in Season 15 and my heart goes out to her and her family. I love our Project Run and Play family and the community that surrounds us. I am a mom of 5, ages 18-8, and just sent my oldest son off to North Carolina to serve a mission for our church. I have loved the slower pace this past year and all of the extra family time we've had. I still shuttle all the kiddos between soccer practices and dance lessons but we also manage to throw in lots of movie and game nights too (The Game of Things always gets us laughing)! I started sewing in high school but didn't really get into it until my oldest daughter was born. I've learned lots through pattern testing and working my way through my massive pdf pattern collection. You can follow me at SewSophieLynn on Instagram.
My name is Carin and I am wife, mom to two and live in Illinois. I currently homeschool both my children and we are loving it. Both my hubby and myself were born in South Africa , lived in Switzerland for 2 years after we got married and have been living all across the USA for the past 16 years.
My love of Sewing? The phrase “I got it from my Mama” rings very true here. I grew up in my Mom’s sewing room. She is a self-taught amazing seamstress that went from sewing for herself, us and many other people into teaching sewing classes out of her garage. I have a B.Sc in Home Economics and even though the art of sewing, designing etc. was a huge part of it, my love and skill comes from my wonderful Mom.
I grew up in my mom's sewing room. I didn't sew for a while after college but after my now 10 year old was born, I started and haven't stopped since.
My style includes lots and lots of color, I love technique and always try to improve on my own. I love old-fashioned sewing with a modern twist. I view every item I sew as a piece of Art – from the moment I put it together in my head, to picking out fabrics, sewing and pressing the very last hem.
I love flipping a well designed pattern and putting my own twist on it. Sharing my craft with people is always a blessing.

Now let's have a look a the Stash Bash creations:
Cool Kids with Style - Naeh Connection
Wohoo, I'm so excited to be part of this mini season. Although, when I learned that pattern hacking was the theme for this week, I was a bit bummed. Why bummed? Because all these patterns are SOOO good already and I would have loved to just cut my pieces and follow the instructions. Well, I guess Audrey knew that I needed a challenge ;) I decided to sew an outfit for each of my kids. I didn't want to spend tons of money and ended up using mostly what I had in my stash. I only bought the fabric and notions for my daughter's jacket. So, let's dive in: The first outfit that I sewed was the one of my younger daughter. She already has a hand-me-down turtleneck shirt which suits her so well. So, I decided to turn the shirt of the Nini Noni Nightwear Pattern into another turtleneck shirt without the horizontal split. I LOVE the look of the Novella Pinafore and decided to do a pattern mash with the equally fantastic Prose Pants. I mean, look at that cuteness!!! Does it get any sweeter than little girls in overalls? Small details like the "Love" label and little horse button (which has been waiting for just the right project for quite some time...) as well as top-stitching (like on jeans) and cover stitched hems (of the shirt) make this a cute, yet professional looking outfit.
My son (who btw. cut his own hair just in time for the photoshoot…) NEEDS comfortable clothes. Anything too close fitting, with buttons, zippers or woven (how dare you, mom?) fabrics won't get a lot of wear. I chose to make his outfit cool, fun and in case of the pants slightly oversized. It doesn't get more comfortable than that! I used the George Hoodie pattern to make a fun color blocked hoodie using up almost all scraps of red sweatshirt fleece that I had in my stash. A teal downward arrow in the front and a beautiful patch are unique details that are even teen-approved (my oldest daughter has asked already for a sweater just like her brother's). I really took my time to get the "Vs" of the arrow perfect. His pants are some hacked Joseph Joggers out of denim jersey. To give them the oversize, yet still sleek look, I added pleats at the waistline of both front legs. I used the slash and spread method to gain the additional width that then gets folded within the pleats. I also decided to let go of the leg cuffs. Instead, I lengthened the leg pieces and sewed turn-up hems.
For my oldest daughter I used the Joseph Joggers Pattern and some denim jersey, too. However, instead of going oversize, I cut them a lot narrower then the pattern suggests to achieve the look of denim leggings. Just as for the pants of the other two kids, I again topstitched all seams as you would for some jeans. I lengthened the legs and hemmed them, too. The last pattern that I used is the Story Pattern. I simply adore the look of this pattern and HAD to sew it for her. I remembered a sherpa jacket with oversized sleeves that I had seen a teenager wear in front of my daughters school some time ago. A rather cool look that I decided to sew according to my - and my daughter's - style. She chose the blue sherpa fabric and some pink notions for added visual interest (I just love the contrast between blue and pink). Besides the zipper in the front I also departed from the Story pattern by adding a hood and a hem band. Overall, a rather cool jacket, if I might say so myself. The pink label sums it up perfectly: OHHLALA. Do you want to see some more pics of all outfits and maybe some outtakes, too? Then, come check out my blog.
Somewhere over the Rainbow - Made of Starlite
I had *such* grand plans for my week on this mini season of Project Run and Play! Not only is the theme for the week right up my alley, (Pattern hacking! My favorite!) but my daughter and I also came up with a great sub theme as well that we are both super excited to make a full wardrobe with! Our sub theme for the week is "Somewhere over the Rainbow" which feels like the perfect uplifting theme for these crazy times. 😊 Anyway, two pieces into our mini collection, and I was hit with a nasty flu bug that rendered me completely useless for 8 days straight. 😑 Luckily I worked ahead, so we still have two little looks as part of our rainbow hack entry!
This first one really isn't much of a hack, because she loves the original pattern so much! The Story Top with it's puff sleeves is just so daring, all I did was add a ruffled neckband and some HTV to the front. My daughters has been *begging* for some overalls forever, and after a few (horrible) attempts to draft some pants for the Novella pinafore, I just went ahead and used a truly well drafted pattern: the Loveralls. 😍 These just come together so beautifully! Project Run and Play is the ONLY place to get this fabulous pattern now that Celina closed her Petit a Petit pattern shop! I used the last of this neon pink stretch denim from Mood that I've been carefully cutting for 3 years. I'm impressed that I squeaked three items out of the 2 yards!
The second look is this adorable rainbow tulle dress! We found the polkadot tulle at JoAnns, and built the look from there. If my uniform is sweats and fuzzy sweaters, my daughter's is leggings and knit dresses. I used the Nini Nomi nightwear for this dress, because I could use a longer portion of the tulle than if I added a skirt at waist length or another pattern. I went a little more upscale by lining the bodice to eliminate the neckband, which also allowed me to sandwich the skirt lining layer between the bodice layers. I decided to use a super lightweight woven fabric for the skirt lining, to help keep the dress as light and floaty as possible! I opted to keep the tulle entirely on the outside of the dress, not only to prevent stretching out the chest seam on an already wide design, but also because I love that cute little extra ruffle that all the Target dresses seem to have. 😉

Mini Season 2 Week 1: Stash Bash
Are you ready! You're going to be so inspired to bust out those favorite hoarded fabrics and get sewing!
Before we show you the looks created by our two fabulous designers, we HAVE to tell you about what they'll be winning! This week's sponsor is a long time supporter of Project Run & Play, Raspberry Creek Fabrics! They will be rewarding these designers with $100 and $75 gift certificates!!!
Now let's have a look a the Stash Bash creations:
Into the Wilderness - W. Pratt Crafts

Inspiration can come from many places and when the theme for this week was announced I had no choice but to find some within my own stash! Knowing I wanted to make an outfit for my oldest, I gathered a handful of neutrals I knew he would prefer together and set to work. After seeing the Project Lounge Library Capsule I found some great options that would work with the fabrics I had on hand. The goal was to make an outfit he could wear for our outdoor lifestyle here in Colorado; something comfortable, functional, with an added personal touch. The base of his outfit was created using the Nini Noni Nightwear as his top. Unfortunately, I only had a short cut of the black and white stripes so having the built in color blocking not only added a cool detail, it also helped me save on fabric! I did have to piece together the sleeves to get them long enough for his lean frame, but where there's a will there's a way to stripe match to make it work.

I wanted to create staple pieces he could use and wear comfortably, while also giving him some detail you usually only get with custom made items. With this idea in mind, I used the Joseph Joggers and paired them with some wonderful black French Terry on my shelf from Amelia Lane Designs. But, instead of just plain black, I added a bleach and dye treatment to the fabric before sewing them together to create a fun splatter look. He absolutely loves the comfort of the fit and the detail of the newly created "print". Plus, combining a functional drawstring with the elastic waist meant he is able to comfortably adjust the fit as needed. He was easily able to hike, run, climb, and do just about everything you'd expect a kid to do in the woods. I have no doubt these joggers will be a regular in his daily rotation.

Because our weather often fluctuates between snowy and cold to sunny and temperate within the winter months, I knew he would benefit from a couple of outerwear pieces to help layer when needed without being too bulky in warmer temps. I lucked out and found some quilted knit to pair with this green woven fabric to make him a hooded vest, complete with multiple pockets, welt and zippered, for any treasures found by my rock collector. Then, inspired by our surroundings I added mountain-scape detailed stitching to the back to add a personalized touch. Finally, to top it off I found a piece of scrap leather and used it to make a custom embroidered trucker front baseball hat. I had every intention of stealing this hat, but after he put it on I'm not sure he's going to let that happen! Thank you for checking out our look and for more photos and details on how I created each piece please check out my blog post here.

I was so excited to learn that my week for this mini season would be sewing from my stash. If you follow me on Instagram you know that I have a pretty extensive fabric collection (a.k.a. stash) because that is Hazel's favorite background for pictures taken in the things I have made for her. I talked to all 3 kids and asked if they wanted me to sew something for each of them and gave them the patterns that would fit them from the Project Run and Play Lounge Library and asked them to pick one to use! They all made great choices!

Hazel and Jo wanted some day time fun clothes to hang out at home! They both picked rainbow themes but each has a different idea of what a rainbow is! Jo likes her grunge rainbow look but Hazel likes more traditional rainbows! Jo's look is the Story pattern combined with the Joseph Joggers pattern! She is all about comfort and style and these two patterns together pack quite the punch! Hazel's idea of comfort is something fun to wear and usually a dress! I combined the Novella Pinafore and Alice patterns to make Hazel's look! You may notice I added some extra twirl to Novella and if you look close you will notice that Alice is made from knit material and not the woven the pattern calls for, Hazel insisted that this material was perfect and who am I to say no! Both were comfortable as they played, read and danced to their favorite music!

As day turned to evening everyone wanted some pjs and the Nini Noni Nightwear pattern was perfect! The pattern goes to size 16 so Sam was able to join in on our bedtime dance party in mom and dad's room! All 3 kids were able to dance the night away in this perfect pattern! It may be winter here but my kids like to be colder when they sleep so I did short sleeves for all but if they wanted to have a pj day I kept the pants long! Hazel tends to be a little long legged so I added the ruffle for the shorts to her pants and gave her the length she likes! As their current favorite song says "watch me bring the fire and set the night alight," and they all did that as they danced until story time! Everyone has requested more of these PJ's though I have a feeling I will see Sam trying to wear his to school!

Thank you for letting me share my kids and their crazy style with you! I love them all so much and I love they could all express their style and favorite things just by picking fabric from my collection of fabric and the Project Run and Play Loungewear collection! Please head over to my blog for more details.

Hello! My name is Carissa and I am the brains behind Love, Hazel Grace Designs. I live outside of Bloomington, IL with my husband – Aaron - and my three amazing children – Samuel, Johanna and Hazel.
I am an attorney who as of January 1, 2021 just opened my own office but I have been sewing and creating since I can remember at my mom and both my Grandma’s knees! Since Johanna was a little girl I have made so much of her wardrobe and even had a stint designing doll clothes for Ellie Inspired in 2013. I love to mash up patterns and make what my little girls and my son desire! I have been designing clothes for my children for more than 10 years! Recently I started blogging about my sewing and crafting adventures as well!

First up, some tester versions of the Poetry Skirt:
Carol sewed this fun bright pink Poetry Skirt.
Claudia made us all want to sew another one with fun contrasting pockets!
Gabrielle's floral version left us gasping.
Marieke showed how well a large statement floral works with this pattern...and a gorgeous velvet tie too!
MB's version of the Poetry Skirt is so adorable, and that contrasting green tie is the best!
Trine sewed up a couple of them, one with a fun contrasting spider print!
Now the Prose Cargo Joggers. It's actually due to tester requests that this pattern has the shorts version and the version with no elastic on the ankle. They helped it become such a versatile pattern!!!
Sonia's daughter shows off this fantastic basic pair of Prose Pants. Did you notice that pop of pink at the tie? So good!
Sarah gave us a double take with this pair of linen Prose Cargo Pants!
Pascale sewed this fun version in a french terry!
Nele sewed up these adorable Prose Pants for her boys.
Both of Michelle's kids look amazing in their Prose Cargo Joggers and Pants!
We love what MB did at the waistband on these Prose Cargo Joggers!
Marieke helped get the fit just right for boys in the largest size!
Lisa did such an amazing job adjusting the pattern for her long and lanky son.
Liesel sewed up Prose Pants for her son and a Biography Bomigan too!
Krn sewed up so many incredible versions of the Prose Cargo Joggers, we were hard pressed deciding which one to share!
Kara said these Prose Cargo Joggers receive constant wear!
